Global Scans · Affordable and Clean Energy · Weekly Summary

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.
Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

  • [New] Technology group Wartsila has begun testing its thermal balancing engines using pure hydrogen and expects to have an engine and power plant concept capable of running on 100% hydrogen by 2025, enabling the transition to decarbonised energy systems around the world. Robin Whitlock
  • [New] The energy transition is failing and policymakers should abandon the fantasy of phasing out oil and gas, as demand for fossil fuels is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Stop These things
  • [New] Albanese points to the US Inflation Reduction Act which will direct US$ 400 billion ($605 billion) in federal funding to support clean energy and the US CHIPS Act which will direct $280 billion ($422 billion) in new funding to boost research and manufacturing of semiconductors. • [New] Achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 is a daunting challenge, and will require a significant expansion of clean energy sources, including nuclear power. Mirage News
  • [New] Maryland now has a goal of 8.5 gigawatts of offshore wind, which will be enough to power 3 million homes, of Maryland homes, alone in that, and turn us into a net exporter of clean energy, and not just a net importer. The Washington Post
  • [New] Renewable energy is set to generate nearly 25% of American electricity in 2024; by 2030, the US could see up to 850 gigawatts of new utility-scale solar, wind, and storage installations, driven by increased federal funding and tax incentives. Gilmore
  • [New] The opportunity to produce Green Hydrogen through renewable electrolysis of water is emerging throughout Australia as we develop and increase renewable energy capacity (predominantly via solar and wind). Hfw
  • [New] Digitalization will contribute to the European Green Deal and a Europe fit for the digital age policy initiatives and support the objectives of the Energy Union by promoting connectivity, operability and use of renewable energy. European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency
  • [New] The price of carbon is still too low globally, and the political difficulty of having energy consumers face the cost of carbon in their everyday decisions is one of the reasons why the energy transition will move slower than many people hope. Energy Connects
  • [New] Green hydrogen has the potential to reduce GHG emissions in multiple sectors in Atlantic Canada and as a flexible energy carrier it can allow for deep decarbonization scenarios. EverWind Fuels
  • [New] Adani TotalEnergies E-Mobility Limited's and MG Motor India's partnership to develop charging infrastructure marks a significant milestone and will play a crucial role in accelerating India's energy transition. The Shillong Times
  • [New] The initial prototype testing for the HT-PEM fuel cell module is expected to occur at Siemens Energy's testing facility in Erlangen, Germany, in 2025, with the testing of the first fuel cell module scheduled for completion in 2026. EnergyTech
  • [New] The green energy transition represents not just a reaction to the threat of climate change, but also an opportunity to create a healthier and more economically productive planet. Eurasia Review
  • [New] The Bali Roadmap argues in favour of the immediate scaling up funding for the development of clean energy technologies, helping stakeholders across Indonesia navigate the clean energy transition, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. Eurasia Review
  • [New] Adani Green Energy will invest Rs 1.5 trillion in expanding capacity to generate electricity from solar energy and wind power at Khavda in Kutch, Gujarat. Projects Today
  • [New] Adani Group will invest Rs 2.3 trillion through 2030 in India's renewable energy expansion, including solar and wind manufacturing capacity addition to pursue its growth plans. Projects Today
  • [New] Bruce Power will explore opportunities to leverage excess energy from the Bruce station (i.e. i.e., energy that is not currently being transmitted to the electricity system) for hydrogen production. Ontario.ca
  • [New] Africa is facing more severe effects from climate change than much of the rest of the world; coastal floods could impact energy infrastructure, while water stress may threaten the main input needed to produce green hydrogen, even though it uses less water than other forms of hydrogen production. Lombard Odier
  • [New] Adani Green Energy will invest around Rs41,400 crore, or roughly $5 billion, in expanding the solar and wind power capacities at its flagship renewable energy (RE) park in Gujarat by 2026. BusinessLine
  • [New] An innovative renewable energy and transmission project - the Champlain Hudson Power Express - will provide resilience and environmental benefits while generating billions of dollars in new investment in New York City. National Hydropower Association
